Ashraf Music

Biography - the Man and the Music

A direct descendant of the Pharaoh bloodline born in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Ashraf Amin moved to Canada at age five. As Iran and Iraq were at war, a bomb exploded near his home, prompting his father to come to Canada, establish himself and send for his family a year later.

Ashraf's interest in music began with church community events. As a youngster, he composed original renditions of Coptic hymns, performing them solo or with a choir, and wrote and performed numerous comedy sketches with friends. Inspired by his father, a singer and hand percussionist in a band that had toured throughout Egypt, Ashraf began seriously learning to play piano and hand drums, the Egyptian equivalent of the North American drum kit, when he was nine years old. At 13, he bought a beat-up little guitar for $35 from the back of a friend's van and taught himself to play it left-handed and upside-down, like Jimi Hendrix.

Ashraf's day job was the inspiration behind his song Anymore, and at a company Christmas party he experienced a turning point in his career. Upon receiving a roaring standing ovation for performing a humorous lip sync and choreographed dance routine to Milli Vanilli's "Girl You Know It's True," Ashraf realized music was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

Over the next five years, Ashraf composed the songs on his debut album, inspired by artists including Dr. Dre, The Dave Mathews Band, Lincoln Park, Metallica, Maroon 5, Prince and The Beatles. Breaking all traditional songwriting rules, he conceived the album as a whole and began by laying down the rhythm tracks for all of the songs. He then wrote the melodies to groove with the rhythms, laying the foundation in which the lyrics would fit. After completing the lyrics, with themes of relationships, love, good and evil, and dancing and having a good time, the next layers to follow were the piano, acoustic and electric guitar, and finally the bass parts. Ashraf sang and played all the instruments on his debut album, following in the footsteps of one of his musical inspirations, Lenny Kravitz. He is mostly self-taught, learning and writing music by ear.

In February 2005, Ashraf spent a month recording the album at Metalworks Studio, then designed all the artwork. Ashraf has won awards for his abstract acrylic art on canvas, and has sold paintings publicly displayed at venues including the Scarborough Civic Centre. Once the artwork was complete and the CDs were manufactured, he set out to find a group of like-minded musicians to perform and tour in support of the album. Ashraf had his first performance with his band in January 2006, and has been performing regularly ever since.
